The landfill-bound trash generated by St. Thomas picnickers as they enjoyed the comradery of fellow parishioners during last Sunday's Rejoice and Reconnect outing at the Elm Street Park filled only ONE bag. Thanks to the careful planning of the picnic committee and the thoughtful engagement of all attendees, landfill waste was kept to a minimum. Composting and recycling made the difference. Compostable plates, cups, napkins were tossed in with compostable food scraps. Clynk bags from Hannaford Grocery Store were used to collect plastic water and soda bottles. (Their deposit will be returned to St. Thomas for future water protection projects.) Other items, such as aluminum trays and serving dishes, were rinsed and, along with paper bags and cardboard boxes, placed in the recycling bin.
