We are confronted with a choice which cannot be ignored: either to improve or to destroy the environment. (Pope Francis)
Recycling is a choice that saves valuable resources and limits waste.
To ensure the marketability of our recyclables in the changing global marketplace, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is encouraging all New Yorkers to “recycle right.” That means:
Follow community guidelines for all recyclables, making sure they are clean and dry when put into the bin
To avoid contaminating the recycling materials, never put the following into recycling bins:
Plastic bags (Return clean empty plastic bags and film plastic to retail recycling
locations, for example grocery stores.)
Single use cups and plates, condiment packages, coffee pods, stirrers, straws,
paper napkins
Rechargeable batteries (Return rechargeable batteries to these retail recycling locations)
Yard trimmings and food scraps (Compost at home or through local municipal
program).
Dishware, mirrors, glassware and ceramics (Donate if in good condition)
